Family Travel: Huatulco with Kids

Traveling with kids can feel overwhelming anywhere — especially internationally. Before our first trip to Huatulco in 2022, we had many of the same questions most parents do.

Would it feel safe?
Would it be stroller friendly?
Would restaurants accommodate kids?
Would we be able to find diapers, groceries, and familiar foods?
Would traveling there with babies and toddlers actually be enjoyable?

After multiple extended stays in Huatulco with our children, we can honestly say it has become one of our favorite family-friendly destinations we’ve ever visited.

Compared to many larger tourist destinations in Mexico, Huatulco feels calmer, slower paced, and far more family-oriented. The beaches are generally swimmable, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s common to see multi-generational families spending time together throughout town and on the beaches.

We’ve now traveled to Huatulco with babies, toddlers, and young children for stays ranging from two weeks to six weeks at a time — and we’re even returning for a three-month stay in 2027 as we work toward eventually relocating there permanently.

Whether you’re traveling with a baby for the first time or planning a longer family stay, these guides will help you prepare for what traveling to Huatulco with kids is really like.

Why We Love Huatulco for Families

One of the biggest things that stood out to us in Huatulco was how family-oriented the culture feels.

Children are welcomed almost everywhere. Restaurants were consistently accommodating, locals were incredibly kind with our kids, and we rarely felt stressed bringing them along with us throughout town or to restaurants and beaches.

Unlike some larger tourist destinations, Huatulco never felt overly loud or party-focused to us. The atmosphere feels much calmer and more relaxed, which made traveling with young children significantly easier.

The beaches are another huge reason we continue returning. Many of Huatulco’s beaches have calmer water than what you’ll find in other parts of Mexico, making them much more manageable for families with small children.

Resort or Condo?

One of the biggest decisions families will make when planning a trip to Huatulco is whether to stay at an all-inclusive resort or rent a condo/vacation rental.

For families wanting maximum convenience, all-inclusive resorts can make things simpler. Meals, pools, beach access, and activities are all located in one place, which can reduce a lot of the mental load that comes with traveling with kids.

For our family personally, we’ve always chosen condos and vacation rentals instead. Having separate bedrooms, laundry, kitchens, extra space, and flexibility with naps and meals worked much better for our style of travel.

Both options can work extremely well — it really depends on the type of trip your family wants.
