Playa Chahue, Huatulco

One of the things we love most about Playa Chahué is how much space there is to simply sit, relax, and enjoy being beside the ocean.

Playa Chahué is probably the beach I would choose when I don’t actually want to do anything.

Not every beach day has to be about swimming, snorkeling, restaurants, or activities. Sometimes it’s enough just to be near the ocean.

There’s something about Playa Chahué that feels peaceful. It’s wide, open, and usually much quieter than some of Huatulco’s more popular beaches. You can sit and listen to the waves, watch the water, and simply enjoy being there without feeling like you need to be doing anything at all.

For me, this is the beach I’d choose when I want to slow down and reconnect. It’s the kind of place where you can sit with your thoughts, watch the ocean, and let life quiet down for a little while. Whether that’s taking a walk along the shoreline, watching the kids run through the sand, or simply sitting in silence and enjoying the view, Playa Chahué has a calmness to it that I haven’t found at many of Huatulco’s other beaches.

The best part is that it still feels accessible. You’re not hiking down a remote trail or driving to the middle of nowhere. It’s easy to reach by foot, taxi, or car, yet it somehow feels removed from the crowds and the constant activity found at some of the more popular beaches.

If you’re looking for a beach packed with activities, this probably isn’t the one. But if you’re looking for a place to breathe, reflect, and simply enjoy the beauty of being beside the ocean, Playa Chahué might end up being one of your favourites.

What to Expect

Playa Chahué feels very different from many of Huatulco’s other beaches. While beaches like La Entrega and Santa Cruz are often busy with swimmers, snorkelers, vendors, and beachside restaurants, Chahué is much quieter and more laid back.

The beach itself is wide and open, with plenty of space to spread out. One of the things we enjoy most about Chahué is that you never feel crowded. Even when there are other people around, everyone tends to be spread out along the shoreline rather than gathered in one area.

Because the water can have stronger currents, many visitors come here simply to enjoy the scenery rather than spend the entire day in the water. It’s a great place to bring a beach chair, go for a walk, watch the waves, or simply sit and enjoy the ocean breeze.

For families, the wide open beach gives kids plenty of room to run, play in the sand, and explore without feeling packed in beside other beachgoers.

Getting There and Back

Playa Chahué is one of the easier beaches to access in Huatulco.

If you’re staying in Chahué, you can easily walk to the beach. From Santa Cruz or La Crucecita, it’s a longer walk but still completely doable if you enjoy walking and don’t mind spending some time outdoors.

Taxis can drop you off directly at the beach, making it an easy option for families with young children or anyone carrying beach gear. The one thing to keep in mind is that there aren’t usually taxis waiting at the beach itself.

If you need a ride back, simply walk a few minutes to the main road. It’s an easy, flat walk, and you’ll have no trouble finding a taxi there.

Food and Drink

Unlike Santa Cruz or La Entrega, Playa Chahué doesn’t have rows of beachfront restaurants with tables set up directly on the sand.

Instead, you’ll find several restaurants nearby as well as beach clubs overlooking the water. Some of these beach clubs offer day passes that include access to loungers, pools, food service, and washroom facilities.

This setup gives Chahué a different feel than many of the other beaches in Huatulco. Rather than spending the day moving between restaurants and beach vendors, the atmosphere tends to be quieter and more relaxed.

If you’re planning to spend several hours at the beach, consider bringing water and snacks, especially if you’re visiting with young children.

Activities and Vendors

If you’re looking for banana boats, jet skis, beach games, or a busy atmosphere, Playa Chahué probably isn’t the beach you’re looking for.

One of the reasons many people enjoy Chahué is precisely because there isn’t much commercial activity. During our visits, we’ve rarely encountered vendors walking the beach, and there generally aren’t organized activities taking place on the sand.

That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. Chahué is a wonderful place for long walks, beach runs, photography, shell collecting, or simply relaxing beside the ocean.

Sometimes it’s nice to visit a beach without feeling like you’re expected to be doing something. Chahué is one of those places where you can simply slow down and enjoy being there.

Snorkeling

While it may be tempting to snorkel here, Playa Chahué is not one of Huatulco’s better snorkeling beaches.

My husband actually tried snorkeling here during one of our visits. The conditions were safe enough that day, but because of the movement in the water, visibility was poor and there wasn’t much to see.

The stronger currents and wave action often stir up sand and sediment, making it difficult to get the clear water that snorkelers are usually looking for.

If snorkeling is one of your priorities, I’d recommend heading to beaches like La Entrega, Arrocito, or San Agustín instead.

Tips

  • Bring water, especially if you’re planning to spend a few hours relaxing on the beach.
  • If you’re visiting with children, this is a great beach for sand play and running around.
  • Pay attention to water conditions before swimming.
  • If you’re planning to take a taxi home, walk out to the main road rather than waiting at the beach itself.
  • Consider visiting in the late afternoon when the temperatures are more comfortable and the beach takes on a particularly peaceful atmosphere.

Who This Beach Is Best For

Playa Chahué is best for people who want a quiet, peaceful beach experience.

It’s a great choice for couples looking for a romantic walk, solo travellers who want a place to relax and reflect, families with kids who simply want room to play in the sand, or anyone looking to escape the crowds.

If your ideal beach day involves snorkeling, beachside restaurants, vendors, and lots of activity, you’ll probably prefer Santa Cruz or La Entrega.

But if you’re looking for somewhere to slow down, listen to the waves, and enjoy the beauty of the Pacific coast without distractions, Playa Chahué may end up being one of your favourite beaches in Huatulco.
