Laguna, Ventanilla, Huatulco

Laguna Ventanilla is one of the most unique wildlife experiences near Huatulco, where you can explore a mangrove lagoon by boat and see crocodiles in their natural habitat.

Located about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1.5 hours from Huatulco, this is a great activity to pair with the turtle release in Escobilla, as it’s along the same route.

Quick Info

Location: Ventanilla Lagoon
Drive time: ~1 hr 20 min – 1.5 hrs
Main activity: Guided boat tour through the lagoon
Highlights: Crocodiles, birds, deer interaction
Best for: Wildlife lovers, families with older kids

What to Expect

When you arrive, you’ll park and walk a short distance to the lagoon entrance.

You’ll be assigned a local guide and get into a small boat to begin your tour through the mangroves. Life jackets are provided.

As you move through the lagoon, you may see crocodiles, various bird species, and other wildlife. The experience is calm but still feels a bit adventurous.

During the tour, the boat will stop at a small island where you can get off and walk around. Here, you’ll be able to interact with deer, which will often come up to you and eat vegetation from your hand.

There is also a small restaurant on the island where you can get a drink or snack.

Getting There & Back

Laguna Ventanilla is about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1.5 hours from Huatulco.

Driving yourself:

  • Easy to navigate using Google Maps
  • Parking available on arrival
  • Short walk into the lagoon area

Organized tour:

  • Transportation included
  • Often combined with turtle release
  • Less planning required

Because of the distance, it’s best to plan this as a half-day or full-day outing.

Booking & Cost

Tours are typically arranged on arrival with local guides at the lagoon.

You’ll be assigned a guide and boat when you get there, and they will walk you through the process.

Pricing can vary slightly, so it’s best to confirm on arrival or through a tour operator if booking in advance.

Timing & Flexibility

  • The full experience (boat + island stop) takes about 1–2 hours
  • Plus travel time

You can visit at different times of day, but going earlier can help avoid peak heat.

This activity pairs well with the turtle release for a full-day experience.

Is This Suitable for Kids?

This can be a great experience for kids, but it is better suited for slightly older children.

The boat ride requires children to sit still for safety, and the heat can make the experience more challenging for younger kids.

Based on experience, this is best suited for children around 5 years and older, who are able to follow instructions and handle the heat better.

If bringing younger children:

  • Consider bringing your own life jacket for a better fit
  • Be prepared for the heat and movement
