One of the biggest things to understand before booking accommodations in Huatulco is that each area offers a very different experience.
Unlike destinations with one long beachfront hotel strip, Huatulco is spread across multiple bays and sectors. Some areas are more walkable and central, while others are quieter, more residential, or focused around resorts and ocean views.
The best area for you will depend on what matters most during your trip:
- Walkability
- Beach access
- Restaurants and nightlife
- Quiet surroundings
- Ocean views
- Family-friendly accommodations
- Resort amenities
We’ve personally stayed in:
- La Crucecita
- Chahue
- Tangolunda
and have explored many of the surrounding areas and beaches throughout multiple trips to Huatulco.

Important: Huatulco vs Santa María Huatulco
This confuses many first-time visitors when searching for accommodations online.
When searching on Airbnb, VRBO, or Google Maps, you may see both:
- Huatulco
- Santa María Huatulco
appear as location options.
Santa María Huatulco is a separate inland town located away from the main tourist and beach areas.
Most visitors looking to stay near:
- Beaches
- Restaurants
- Tourist areas
- Grocery stores
- The marina
will want to stay in areas like:
- La Crucecita
- Santa Cruz
- Chahue
- Tangolunda
- Arrocito
If you’re searching for accommodations online, using “La Crucecita” is often the easiest way to find accommodations near the main downtown tourist area.
Understanding Huatulco’s Layout
Huatulco is very different from many other Mexican beach destinations.
Instead of one long stretch of beach lined with hotels and restaurants, Huatulco is made up of separate bays and sectors spread throughout the area.
Because of this:
- Many accommodations are not directly on the beach
- Beaches often feel more like individual outings or destinations
- Ocean-view properties are often located on hillsides
- Taxis are commonly used between areas
Some accommodations may advertise:
- “Beach access”
- “Ocean views”
- “Walking distance to the beach”
but it’s important to understand that this can still involve:
- Hills
- Stairs
- Heat
- Longer walks than expected
This is especially important when traveling with:
- Young children
- Strollers
- Mobility concerns
- Older adults
For us personally, this wasn’t a negative — it’s actually part of what makes Huatulco feel unique and less overdeveloped — but it’s important to understand before booking.
La Crucecita
Best For
- Walkability
- Restaurants
- Families
- Longer stays
- Local atmosphere
What It’s Like
La Crucecita is the main downtown area of Huatulco.
This is where you’ll find:
- Restaurants
- Cafes
- Grocery stores
- Fruit stands
- Shops
- Parks and playgrounds
- The town square
We personally loved staying in La Crucecita because it felt vibrant and lively without being overwhelming.
It has much more of a local town atmosphere compared to the resort areas, and we enjoyed being able to:
- Walk for ice cream at night
- Browse local shops
- Visit restaurants easily
- People watch in the evenings
The main downtown area is relatively flat and very walkable compared to many other areas in Mexico.
Important to Know
La Crucecita is not directly on the beach.
The closest swimmable beach is Santa Cruz, which is approximately:
- 20–25 minutes walking
- or a short taxi ride away
There is a paved tourist corridor connecting La Crucecita to Santa Cruz Beach, making the walk straightforward and stroller-friendly.
Keep in mind though:
- The walk to the beach is mostly downhill
- Which means the walk back is uphill
- And the heat in Huatulco can feel intense, especially midday
Some travelers tolerate the heat much better than others.
Pros
- Most walkable area
- Lots of restaurants and shops
- Grocery stores nearby
- Easy taxi access
- Great for families
- More local atmosphere
- Good for longer stays
Cons
- Not directly on the beach
- Beach days require more planning
- Walking back from the beach can feel hot and uphill
- Busier than some residential areas
Santa Cruz
Best For
- Beach access
- Families
- Marina area
- Convenience
What It’s Like
Santa Cruz is one of the most popular areas to stay in Huatulco because it offers easier access to one of the main swimmable beaches while still having nearby restaurants and amenities.
There are:
- Condos
- Hotels
- Restaurants
- Small shops
- Convenience stores
- Marina access
all within the area.
If being close to the beach is a major priority while still having some walkability and restaurant options, Santa Cruz is probably one of the best fits.
Beach Access
This is one of the few areas in Huatulco where you can stay very close to the beach.
Some accommodations are only:
- A few minutes walk from the sand
That said, true beachfront accommodations are still somewhat limited compared to other Mexican beach destinations.
There are some condos and accommodations overlooking Santa Cruz Bay from elevated areas, but keep in mind that:
- Ocean views often mean hills
- Beach access may involve stairs or steep walks
Pros
- Close to the beach
- Marina nearby
- Walkable
- Restaurants and cafes nearby
- Easier beach access than La Crucecita
Cons
- Fewer shops and restaurants than La Crucecita
- Grocery stores further away
- Some accommodations are on hillsides
Chahue
Best For
- Condo stays
- Quieter atmosphere
- Longer stays
- Families
What It’s Like
We’ve stayed in Chahue twice and really enjoyed it.
Chahue feels quieter and more residential while still being relatively central.
You’re close to:
- Grocery stores
- Some restaurants
- Chahue Beach
and still within walking distance of:
- La Crucecita
- Santa Cruz
although those walks are longer.
Important to Know
Chahue Beach is swimmable depending on conditions, but it’s generally not considered one of the more popular swimming beaches compared to places like:
- Santa Cruz
- La Entrega
because stronger currents and rougher water conditions can sometimes occur.
Most visitors staying in Chahue still tend to spend beach days at other beaches around Huatulco.
Pros
- Quieter than downtown
- Good condo options
- More residential feel
- Close to grocery stores
- Still relatively central
Cons
- Further from swimmable beaches
- Less lively at night
- Fewer restaurants and shops nearby
Tangolunda
Best For
- Resorts
- Luxury stays
- Ocean views
- Relaxation
What It’s Like
Tangolunda is Huatulco’s main resort area.
This is where you’ll find many of the larger resorts and more upscale vacation rentals.
The area is beautiful, with:
- Ocean views
- Hillside properties
- Gated communities
- Resort amenities
We stayed in Tangolunda in an Airbnb overlooking the ocean and the views were absolutely stunning.
Important to Know
Tangolunda is much less walkable than areas like La Crucecita or Santa Cruz.
Most outings will require:
- A taxi
- Or a rental car
There are a few restaurants and small plazas in the area, but if you want:
- More restaurants
- Grocery stores
- Nightlife
- Shopping
you’ll likely be traveling into La Crucecita.
We personally found it beautiful and relaxing, but we missed being able to:
- Walk around town
- Go for evening strolls
- Easily grab food or ice cream nearby
About “Private Beach Access”
Some accommodations in Tangolunda advertise:
- Private beach access
- Beachfront access
but it’s important to understand that this can sometimes involve:
- Long staircases
- Hills
- Rocky access paths
Our rental technically had private beach access, but getting down to the beach involved:
- Many stairs
- Walking over rocks
and it wasn’t practical for:
- Young children
- Mobility limitations
The views were incredible, but the beach itself wasn’t necessarily convenient to access.
Pros
- Beautiful views
- Resort amenities
- Pools and luxury accommodations
- Quiet atmosphere
- Relaxing environment
Cons
- Not very walkable
- Requires taxis for most outings
- Limited nearby restaurants and shops
- Hills and stairs in many areas
Arrocito
Best For
- Quiet stays
- Residential atmosphere
- Vacation homes
What It’s Like
Arrocito is a quieter residential area located closer to Tangolunda.
It’s more removed from the main tourist areas and is made up primarily of:
- Vacation homes
- Residential properties
- Condos
This area tends to appeal more to travelers wanting a quieter stay rather than walkability or nightlife.
Important to Know
Arrocito is not very walkable and most outings will require:
- A taxi
- Or a rental car
Like Tangolunda, many properties in the area are elevated and may involve hills or stairs.
Heat, Hills & Walkability
One thing many first-time visitors underestimate is the heat in Huatulco.
Walking distances that may seem reasonable on a map can feel much longer in:
- Midday heat
- Humidity
- Uphill sections
Some travelers are affected by the heat much more than others.
While the main downtown areas are relatively flat and walkable, many beach areas and ocean-view properties involve:
- Hills
- Elevation changes
- Stairs
This is especially important to consider if traveling with:
- Young children
- Strollers
- Mobility concerns
That said, Huatulco is actually one of the more stroller-friendly and mobility-friendly places we’ve visited in Mexico.
Many areas have:
- Sidewalk ramps
- Wide walking paths
- Paved pedestrian corridors
especially around:
- Downtown La Crucecita
- Santa Cruz
- The tourist corridor
Pools Matter More Than You Think
For us personally, having a pool was extremely important.
In Huatulco, beach days often feel more like full outings rather than simply stepping outside your hotel room onto the sand.
Because of this, having a pool at your accommodations becomes really valuable for:
- Cooling off after a hot day
- Relaxing in the evenings
- Easier swimming with kids
- Low-key days between activities
For families especially, pools can make travel much easier.
Swimming in a pool is often:
- Easier than the ocean with young kids
- Less overwhelming
- More relaxing on slower days
We personally would not stay anywhere in Huatulco without a pool, although everyone’s priorities are different.
Air Conditioning in Huatulco
Air conditioning is something we personally prioritize heavily in Huatulco due to the heat and humidity.
Most vacation rentals and newer condos do have air conditioning, but it’s still important to confirm before booking.
Unlike central air systems common in Canada and the U.S., many accommodations in Huatulco use:
- Individual wall-mounted AC units
- Separate room controls
One thing we actually liked about the wall-unit setup was being able to keep different rooms at different temperatures — for example, my mother-in-law likes sleeping with the AC freezing cold, while I prefer it just cool enough to take the edge off.
Some things to check before booking:
- Which rooms have AC units
- Whether the living room has air conditioning
- Whether all bedrooms are air conditioned
Most newer condos and vacation rentals are well set up with AC, but some older or budget accommodations may have more limited cooling options.
Water, Power & Utilities
Like many growing areas in Mexico, occasional:
- Water outages
- Power outages
- Utility interruptions
can sometimes happen in Huatulco.
In our experience, these situations have generally been temporary and manageable.
We’ve experienced:
- Planned water interruptions
- A short power outage during one stay
but nothing that significantly impacted our trips.
If you experience an issue during your stay, it’s best to communicate directly with the property manager or host.
Noise Levels in Huatulco
Huatulco is generally not a major party destination like Cancun or Cabo.
Overall, we found it relatively quiet at night compared to many tourist destinations in Mexico.
That said, Mexico is naturally vibrant and full of life.
You may hear:
- Traffic
- Dogs barking
- Roosters
- Music
- Gas trucks with loudspeaker advertisements
- Holiday celebrations
- Construction nearby
especially during:
- Semana Santa (Holy Week)
- Christmas holidays
- Busy travel periods
For us personally, this was never disruptive. We’ve heard everything from distant music to the occasional stray cat fight outside our condo at night — but honestly, it just felt like part of everyday life in Mexico.
If you’re very sensitive to noise or traveling with young children, staying in quieter residential areas may be preferable over staying directly near downtown.
Resorts vs Vacation Rentals
Huatulco offers:
- Resorts
- Hotels
- Condos
- Vacation rentals
- Airbnb and VRBO listings
The main all-inclusive resorts are located in the Tangolunda area, including:
- Dreams
- Secrets
- Barcelo
We personally have never stayed at the resorts in Huatulco, so we can’t speak directly on those experiences.
Our travel style tends to lean more toward:
- Vacation rentals
- Condos
- Independent travel
- Exploring local restaurants and beaches
rather than staying primarily on resort properties.
Booking Vacation Rentals Safely
We’ve booked accommodations in Huatulco through:
- Airbnb
- Local property managers
- Direct bookings
- Recommendations from other travelers
Booking directly through property management companies can often save a significant amount of money because you avoid Airbnb or VRBO service fees.
In some cases, we found the exact same property listed:
- On Airbnb
- And directly through the company’s own website
for much lower prices when booking direct.
Important Things to Know
Booking through Airbnb or VRBO does provide:
- Additional booking protections
- Easier refund processes
- Platform support if issues arise
Booking direct is very common in Huatulco, but you should still do your due diligence.
Tips for Booking Safely
Before booking directly:
- Look for a legitimate website
- Search reviews online
- Search the company name in Facebook groups
- Ask questions
- Confirm the exact location
- Read the rental agreement carefully
Be cautious of:
- Pressure tactics
- Requests for unusual payment methods
- Listings with very little information
- Deals that seem too good to be true
Trust your gut if something feels off.
Tip: Ask About Discounts
If you find a property on Airbnb or VRBO that feels slightly out of budget, it can sometimes be worth politely asking the host if they’re flexible on pricing.
Especially for:
- Longer stays
- Returning guests
- Slower seasons
some hosts may offer discounts.
We’ve personally had success simply:
- Introducing ourselves
- Explaining our trip
- Asking respectfully
Sometimes hosts are more flexible than you’d expect.

Final Thoughts
There’s no single “best” area to stay in Huatulco — it really depends on:
- Your travel style
- Your budget
- Whether you prioritize beaches or walkability
- Whether you’re traveling with kids
- How comfortable you are using taxis
For us personally, we loved the balance of staying closer to town while still being able to easily access beaches and activities.
Each area offers a completely different experience, which is part of what makes Huatulco such a unique destination.
