Taxis in Huatulco

Getting around Huatulco is generally easy, and taxis are the primary form of transportation used by both tourists and locals. While there is no Uber in Huatulco, taxis are widely available throughout the main tourist areas and are commonly used for getting between beaches, restaurants, activities, and accommodations.

We used taxis frequently during our trips, including while travelling with young children, and generally found drivers to be friendly, helpful, and easy to work with.

Quick Taxi Tips

  • Taxis are generally cash only
  • Carry smaller bills whenever possible
  • Uber is not commonly used in Huatulco
  • Airport taxis are significantly more expensive than regular city taxis
  • Save the number of a driver you like
  • Arrange return rides ahead of time for remote beaches
  • WhatsApp is widely used in Mexico and helpful to download before your trip

Airport Taxis

When exiting the airport, there is an official taxi stand directly outside the terminal, making it very easy to get transportation into town.

However, airport taxis are significantly more expensive than regular city taxis because they pay fees to operate from the airport.

As a general reference:

  • Airport taxi into the main tourist areas: around 900 pesos
  • Regular taxi from town to the airport: around 225–250 pesos

The drive into the main tourist areas is approximately 20 minutes.

Alternative Airport Transportation Options

Some visitors choose to pre-arrange private transportation ahead of time. Pricing is usually similar to airport taxis, but these services can be helpful because:

  • Drivers often speak English
  • They know your destination ahead of time
  • They meet you at arrivals with a sign

This can be especially helpful if you are staying at a newer condo or accommodation that may be harder to locate.

Another common option is walking outside the airport entrance to the main road and catching a regular city taxi there instead of using the official airport taxis.

The walk is approximately 5–10 minutes, and there is an OXXO convenience store near the road outside the airport entrance.

This can reduce the fare significantly. That order feels very natural.

Taxi Rates & Pricing

Taxis in Huatulco do not use meters.

Instead, there are generally set rates for common routes throughout the area, including:

  • Beaches
  • Downtown areas
  • The airport
  • Popular tourist locations

You will often see rate boards posted around town showing standard taxi pricing between major areas.

Generally speaking, we found most taxi drivers to be quite honest with pricing, especially for shorter rides within the main tourist areas.

However, for longer trips such as:

  • San Agustín
  • The airport
  • The water park
  • Remote beaches or activities

it is always a good idea to confirm the price before getting into the taxi.

Even if there is a small overcharge occasionally, it is usually not by a large amount, but confirming pricing ahead of time helps avoid confusion and ensures everyone is on the same page before the trip begins.

Paying for Taxis

Taxis in Huatulco are generally cash only.

It’s helpful to carry smaller bills whenever possible, especially for shorter rides, as drivers may not always have change for large bills.

For example:

  • A short ride may only cost 40–60 pesos
  • Paying with a 500 peso bill can sometimes be difficult

Tipping

Tipping taxi drivers in Mexico is generally not expected for standard rides.

However, small tips are appreciated if drivers go above and beyond, such as:

  • Helping with luggage
  • Loading strollers or bags
  • Airport pickups and drop-offs
  • Waiting during longer outings

For normal transportation from one location to another, tipping is optional rather than expected.

Taking Taxis with Kids

We frequently used taxis while travelling with children and generally found the experience easy and comfortable.

However, there are a few practical things to keep in mind.

Strollers

Some taxis — especially older vehicles — have smaller trunks, which can make fitting larger strollers difficult.

We found newer taxis generally had:

  • Larger trunks
  • More interior space
  • Better air conditioning

When possible, we would simply wait for a newer vehicle if we had a stroller or lots of bags.

Car Seats & Seat Belts

We have used infant bucket seats in taxis before, but some vehicles may not have easily accessible rear seat belts.

If using a car seat or seat belts is important to you:

  • Check the back seats before loading luggage into the trunk
  • Make sure the seat belts are accessible and functioning

If not, it is usually easy to simply wait for another taxi.

Air Conditioning & Comfort

Vehicle quality can vary.

Some taxis are newer and more spacious, while others are older compact vehicles.

Most drivers will:

  • Turn on the air conditioning for tourists
  • Ask whether you prefer air conditioning or windows down

However, newer taxis generally have more reliable air conditioning, which can make a noticeable difference during hot weather.

Language & Communication

Some taxi drivers in Huatulco speak English, while others speak very little or none at all. However, for most short taxi rides, communication is usually quite simple.

Typically, you only need to:

  • Tell the driver where you are going
  • Confirm the destination
  • Pay at the end of the ride

If you are worried about a language barrier, it can help to:

  • Have the destination written down on your phone
  • Save a screenshot of the address or hotel name
  • Use Google Maps or Google Translate if needed

In most cases, drivers will repeat the destination back to confirm they understand.

Even if there is a language barrier when paying, drivers will usually:

  • Show the amount using fingers
  • Write the number down
  • Use a phone calculator

There are generally easy ways to communicate basic information.

Condo Names & Landmarks

One thing we quickly learned is that taxi drivers in Huatulco are often much more familiar with condo complex names, hotels, and landmarks than exact street addresses.

For example:

  • Many condo buildings have well-known names
  • Drivers will often recognize the condo or hotel name immediately
  • Nearby grocery stores or hotels can also work as landmarks

The first time we visited, we tried giving an exact address, but once we mentioned the condo complex name, the driver immediately knew where to go.

If you are staying somewhere newer or less well known, it can help to:

  • Mention a nearby hotel
  • Mention a nearby grocery store or landmark
  • Show the location on Google Maps

Sometimes drivers will simply look at your phone and immediately recognize the area.

Knowing the name of your condo complex or a nearby landmark can make transportation much easier.

WhatsApp in Mexico

WhatsApp is widely used in Mexico and is one of the most useful apps to download before your trip.

Many taxi drivers, tour guides, and local businesses use WhatsApp rather than standard texting.

If you find a taxi driver you like, it’s common to:

  • Save their number
  • Contact them directly for future rides
  • Arrange airport transportation or longer trips ahead of time

For immediate pickups, calling is often easier and faster than messaging.

Many local drivers:

  • Speak English better than they write it
  • Prefer voice notes or phone calls over typing long English messages

However, WhatsApp is still very useful for:

  • Sending locations
  • Confirming times
  • Arranging rides ahead of time
  • Communicating with guides and local businesses

For travellers nervous about language barriers, downloading WhatsApp and Google Translate before arriving can make communication much easier.

Getting Taxis at Beaches & Remote Areas

In the main tourist areas and downtown La Crucecita, taxis are generally easy to find throughout the day and evening.

At beaches and more remote locations, transportation requires a little more planning.

Santa Cruz & La Entrega

  • Taxis are commonly available
  • Wait times may increase near sunset when many people leave at once

Maguey, San Agustín & Remote Areas

  • It’s often best to arrange return rides ahead of time
  • Some taxi drivers provide personal cards with their phone number
  • Restaurants are usually happy to call a taxi for you if needed

Because cell service can sometimes be unreliable in remote areas, planning your return transportation ahead of time is a good idea.

Night Transportation

Taxis are still very easy to find at night in the main tourist areas.

Evenings are often very active in Huatulco, especially around:

  • Downtown La Crucecita
  • The Zócalo
  • Restaurant areas

However, beaches and remote areas may not have taxis waiting late at night, so return transportation may need to be arranged in advance.

Uber & Ride Sharing

Uber is not commonly used in Huatulco.

Standard taxis are the primary transportation option throughout the area.

Tips

  • Carry smaller bills for taxis
  • Save the number of a trusted driver
  • Arrange return rides for remote beaches
  • Ask restaurants or businesses to call taxis if needed
  • Check seat belts before loading luggage if travelling with kids
  • Newer taxis are often more spacious and comfortable
  • Download WhatsApp and Google Translate before your trip
  • Learn the name of your condo complex or nearby landmarks
